Before a show, we install a network of small positioning beacons around the venue – creating a local, satellite-style navigation system inside the building itself. Beacons sit at both high and low points around the room, so every drone can reference several signals at once.
By measuring its distance to each beacon at the same time, a drone can work out exactly where it is on the floor plan of the room, giving the whole swarm a shared, reliable sense of where everyone is.
Beacons handle side-to-side position, but height is a different problem entirely – knowing exactly how far a drone is above the floor, or below the ceiling, at any given moment. Each drone also carries a small onboard LIDAR sensor, firing a quick pulse straight down and timing how long it takes to bounce back. Combined with the beacon network, this gives every drone a complete three-dimensional fix on its own position, so formations can rise, layer and hold their height with total confidence, even directly above an audience.
